Juno: A Birth Control App

University of Pittsburgh's Center for Women’s Health Research and Innovation, is a university-based women’s health research center. The FemTech Collaborative within the center has been developing and evaluating a suite of tools focused around helping people clarify their reproductive health goals, values, and preferences; navigate preference-sensitive decisions; mitigate risk for poor reproductive outcomes, and; communicate with their providers. They came to us with a challenge:

Design a mobile application that allows people of any gender, in relationships or single, to learn about, compare, and choose from available birth control methods

Our Solution

Juno was developed to make birth control selection empowering, freeing, and personalized. Our solution allows birth control users to feel ownership over their birth control decisions while focusing on intimacy and user priorities.

The app consisted of three segments: an introductory screen with questions for a personalized experience, an exploratory graph which allows the user to filter birth control methods based on preferred qualities, and a summary which presented the user with their chosen birth control options and provided guidance on speaking with their doctor.

The Research

Our research centered around existing birth control information resources and interviews with individuals who use birth control. Our interview findings are below:

Our Takeaways

Through our research, we decided on three priorities for our design:

1. Promote and ensure feelings of trust and security

2. Communicate with user clearly and conversationally

3. Clearly signify what users can expect from our app

Juno includes onboarding questions which allow the user to personalize their experience. Birth control methods are visualized through a graph-like system which allows for interaction with bubbles representing each method. This bubble motif is continued in the summary section of the app which tracks the user's preferences and supports planning for future visits with the user's health team.

My Deliverables

I was responsible for designing the summary phase of the app.

In addition to creating the user interface for the summary, I also wrote the copy for the entire app including informative descriptions of birth control methods:
